Joseph Tuckerman papers, 1799-1863.

Papers of Unitarian minister Joseph Tuckerman include loos papers, 20 vols. of diaries, and 13 misc. vols. Tuckerman served as minister of the First Church of Chelsea, Mass. (later Revere) (1801-26) and for the ministry at Large, a city mission for the poor, in Boston (1826-36). The loose papers (1803-63) contain deeds to land in Chelsea, correspondence between him and his wife Sarah (Cary) and their children, a few documents related to his ministry in Chelsea, and papers related to the guardianship of Abigail Cary Tuckerman and the estates of William Harris (Tuckerman was executor), and Rev. Tuckerman, including his will (1839). (Cont) The diaries document his studies, pastoral work and activities at Chelsea, and his missionary work to the poor in Boston. A two-vol. diary documents a trip to London in 1816 where he commented, among other things, on the condition of the poor. A 9-vol. diary written to his wife documents a trip to Europe (1833-34), particularly Liverpool and London where he established city missions for the poor. Additional vols. include sermons (n.d.), a commonplace-book, list of Bible passages read (1818-19), an alphabetical list of pastoral visits (1828-29), personal account book (1839), account book for Poor's Purse (1827-35), and commonplace-books kept by two of Tuckerman's children, Joseph, Jr. (1824-25) and Sarah C. (1825).
